Types of Fire Extinguishers
Foam Extinguishers
Foam extinguishers are used for class B fires. You can check the label on the fire extinguisher to identify what type of fire it extinguishes. For Class B fires, that are caused by organic material such as coal, textiles, cardboard, paper etc, you will see a cream color on the body of the cylinder. The foam fire extinguisher is water based, however it can be used for class A fires as well. Make sure you don’t use Fam extinguishers to put out fires from electrical appliances or metal fires.
Water Extinguishers
Water is an age old fire extinguisher and is the first thing we turn to in case of a fire break-out. However, we have to be careful what we use a water extinguisher on. The mark on the fire extinguisher for a water extinguisher will be red. You can use a water extinguisher when there is no oil based fuel or electricity involved in the fires. Most commonly it is used to put out paper, textile, cardboard, wool, coal garment fires.
Dry Powder Extinguishers
Dry POwder extinguishers can be used for class, class B and Class C fires. This is one of the most common types of fire extinguishers used in places where fire break-out has the highest probability. The dry powder extinguishers can be used for putting out fires from electric appliances, oil fires, fires from metals, on textile, paper, cardboard, garment etc. The dry powder extinguisher is marked by blue color on the cylinder.
When it comes to fires caused by a variety of organic materials like wood, coal, textiles, clothing, cardboard and paper, dry power is very powerful. It can also be used for fires caused by flammable liquids like oil and natural gas, and for flammable substances such as acetylene and liquid petroleum gas. Good thing about Dry powder extinguisher is that it can be used to put out fires on electric equipment upto 1000V. Do not try to use dry powder extinguisher on electric equipment fire on more than 1000V.
Wet Chemical Extinguishers
Wet chemical extinguishers are used to put out class F fires. It is not a common type of fire extinguisher. The type of fire extinguished by wet chemical extinguisher can also be extinguished by Foam extinguishers. The fire includes cooking oils and fats. The wet chemical fire extinguisher can also be used on fire in Class A, but more common are spray or gas extinguishers. Dry powder extinguishers smother fires through the creation of a membrane between the gasoline and the oxygen supply. For this sort of extinguisher the mark color is yellow. In fires caused by various organic materials, including wood, coal, textiles, garments, cardboard and paper, wet chemical extinguishers can also be used.
Carbon Dioxide extinguishers
Carbon dioxide extinguishers are common for electric fires. They can cut the supply of oxygen from an area and extinguish the fire. They can be used in server rooms, so so least amount of damage to the equipment while putting out fire effectively.
